"End of life vehicles (ELVs) are processed in a hammer shredder. The shredding process for automobiles and large appliances consists of a hammer mill that acts as a giant tree shredder where the materials are shredded and smaller pieces are obtained. . After this process, a mixture of ferrous and non-ferrous metals and car shredding residues appears. In general, the residue is composed of plastics / rubber (60%), minerals / glass / earth (15%), textiles / wood. (10%), rust / paint (10%) and metals (5%). This material is called fluff, SLF or ASR (Automotive shredder residue). ASRs sometimes contain dangerous substances such as lead or cadmium, therefore some countries consider it a hazardous waste.
After the process, several materials are obtained that can then be reintroduced into industrial processes: Aluminum, iron, copper ... Fuel derived from waste (CDR) is also obtained, which has a high calorific value for industries that need this type of fuel. Some materials that are in the disposal stage can be used for construction purposes.
In the shredding plants, the materials are crushed and separated by magnetic, pneumatic and manual systems to obtain different output fractions. Ferric and non-ferrous metals, heavy residues (rubber, plastics ...) and light residues (textiles, foams ...) are obtained. There are different stages:
Reception and Storage: these plants have a system in which radioactive materials are detected. They are then weighed and visually inspected.
Feeding and fragmentation: an octopus deposits it in the shredder and the material is fragmented by beating.
Separation by suction currents: the previously crushed product passes through a zigzag duct and with a countercurrent air flow the so-called light residue or fluff is separated. This waste is made up of a set of textiles, rubber, foam, plastics ... its composition varies and is generally sent to a controlled landfill.
Magnetic separation: in this phase, the ferrous residues are separated from the rest and sent to a plant for dense residues for the separation of the metals that exist.
Manual triage: the ferric material is subjected to a manual cleaning to remove any non-ferrous material that may be present.
