Nylon or plastic PA (registered trademark) is a synthetic polymer belonging to the polyamide group. It is a strong and elastic textile fibre, does not need to be ironed, is not attacked by moths and is used to make socks, fabrics or ropes among many other products.

Although it is given different names, nylon is divided into two main types according to the polymer chosen for its manufacture:

  • Nylon 6,6, which is obtained from hexamethylenediamine. It is the best known.
  • Nylon 6, which is obtained from caprolactam.
  • There are also other industrially interesting ones, such as nylon 10,10, which is obtained from castor oil.

This material is created by polycondensation of a diacid with a diamine. The number of carbon atoms in the acid and amine chains can be shown behind the initials of the polyamide. For practical reasons, the acid and amine are not used, but solutions of the amine and the diacid chloride. Between these phases, the polymer is formed, which expands to create the nylon yarn.

It was discovered by accident in 1933 and patented in 1938 by Wallace Hume Carothers. This invention was a revolution for the hosiery market, but the material was soon used as a war material and became very difficult to obtain. The first product to be made from this material was the nylon bristle toothbrush.

Characteristics of nylon

  • It has a density of 1150 kg/m³.
  • It is more resistant to wear and tear.
  • It is ultra-light.
  • It has high dimensional elasticity and high resistance to mould, bacteria and insects.
  • It dries quickly and does not require plaster.
  • It is non-toxic and non-allergenic.
  • It is a non-biodegradable material.

Nylon recycling

Nylon is widely used in textile production, yet it is still a plastic that often ends up as waste in landfills or even in the ocean. It is resistant to environmental corrosionIt is not biodegradable, so it can take more than 500 years to be absorbed by nature. Some of the chemicals it leaves in its wake cause pollution. For this reason, it is very important to recycle it. The textile industry is developing synthetic fibres that are sustainable and non-polluting, and one of these is recycled nylon. The use of this recycled material would help reduce the use of petroleum as a raw material, requires less energy and would extend its useful life, thus reducing landfill waste and not polluting. It is mostly found in sportswear, although its use is expanding to other fashion sectors.
